Twestival: Silly name, great cause

Now, I know what you’re thinking.
“Not another social media portmanteau where people meet up using Twitter, the social micro-blogging service.”
Well, that’s what I thought too.
What this event is really about is not networking face-to-face nor getting twasted IRL (although if that happens at the end of the night, so be it).
Check it out. This event is happening on Thursday, February 12th, 2009, at 8:00PM CST at ACES Lounge on 222 E. 6th St. 78701 (the old Hard Rock Café building)—not to mention in almost 200 other cities worldwide. Since this event is being put on entirely by volunteers, 100% of the ticket sales and donations will go directly to people in need of help through charity: water, a non profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. All of the money raised goes directly to project costs, funding sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need.
Buy a ticket and I’ll see you at the event (they’re just $5 to $15—you’ve got that). Or buy a ticket and I won’t see you there, that’s cool too. I’m not going to try and entice you with the concert or the giveaways that are there. Read about that on the Austin Twestival site. Think about it this way. How amazing would it be to think that the people in Ausitn on Twitter helped fun a well or five for a community in a developing nation. From the charity: water site:
The local community is engaged in the well building process, carrying out small tasks for free to reduce labor costs. This also encourages community participation and ensures community ownership after the project is complete. When the well is built, a water committee is formed. It generally consists of 6-8 people, half of them female. In the case of hospitals, the committee will generally consist of nurses and hospital staff. In schools, the committee would likely be comprised of teachers.
One community reaching out to another community. How awesome.
See you on Thursday.

Thanks for the heads-up on this great event, Cesar!
